Chica Nueva en la Oficina / New Girl in the Office

2. Acepta tus limitaciones. Vas a cometer errores, asúmelo. Si no has entendido algo, dilo.

When you start working in a foreign country every day is an adventure. You get up every morning wondering what life has to bring to you today and even though that feeling dissolves with time, you always wonder if you will be able to fit.

I have worked here for eight months now, in that time I had great days, in which I felt like the queen of Saba, and days in which I only wanted to go home and cry under the sheets. But after all, I have learned three little things I want to share, in case somebody is in need of advice.

1. Relax. I know, I know... it is easy to say, especially the first days, when you are all eyes and ears but you think you don't get a thing. Believe me, you are getting much more than you think you are, you are just too nervous to even notice. You will relax eventually, and think you get everything under control, it is then when reality will slap you in the face in the form of an indecipherable accent or a word you've never heard before. That is why I recommend you to relax, because having it all under control is not a matter of a month (or eight).

2. Accept you limitations. You are going to make mistakes. Deal with it. So don't add more to the list for playing the smart arse. If you haven't understood something, say it. You are not inferior for not understand everything. It is not the end of the world. If you are not explaining yourself properly, just pause, breathe and start over. What is the worst that can happen? That the other person notice you are thinking? Thinking is good and brits are much more comprehending than we give them credit for. On top of that, most of them think our accent is super exotic.

3. Let your work speak for you. For me, not being able to express myself the same way I do in my mother tongue has been a source of frustration. Communication skills are my best features and at the beginning I thought I had lost them. So you have to let your determination, professionalism and initiative speak for you. I still get mad because sometimes I can't think of a witty response on time. Realizing you are not as charming, nice, eloquent or funny as you are in your own language is hard, but it makes bloom other aspects of your personality you didn't even know.

However, if there is something that amazes me, is knowing that the more I learn, the more I see how much I still have to learn. So if you have any piece of advice, please share it in the comments!

Happy Birthday, Love

Hoy me voy a poner ñoña, hoy El Letrado cumple años y yo voy a celebrarlo escribiendo cosas cursis.

1. Ir a ver a Marina Abramovic a las Serpentine Galleries. Estará solo hasta el 25 de agosto.
--------------------------------------------------
After a month of of high temperatures and sunny spells, one almost forgets is living in the UK. But BBC Weather reminded us today. It rains on Sunday! In fact, they have warned summer may be coming to an end.
I was planning to have a picnic on Sunday, but given the weather forecast, I started looking for a plan B. Here is a list of the things I came up with:
1. Go and see Marina Abramovic at the Serpentine Galleries. She will be performing until August 25th.
2. Have some beer at the Clarkshaws Brewery Open Day.
3. Watch Close Encounters of the Third Kind at the Prince Charles Cinema.
4. Brunch at one of the cafes in Brixton Market (and buy fresh fish BTW)
5. Drinks and free live Blues at the Ain't Nothing But.
There are much more, for sure, so if you have thought of something in particular, please share!
With all these plans, who needs sunlight?

----------------------------------------------------------

I have been dreaming about the summer since May. I used to get up excited every morning and check if the clouds were gone. One of my favorite sentences during spring has been "When summer comes I am going to ... (fill the blank with your favorite summer activity)". The Brit heard it once, he looked at me as he was about to tell me Santa Claus doesn't exist. Then he said "Well, don't expect too much".

I kept the faith anyway. Temperatures were raising timidly, but by the middle of July I started thinking that maybe The Brit was right and summer was never going to happen. Turns out he wasn't. Summer takes its time, but it arrives. We don't know for how long will be here, but for the time being we have been wearing flip flops for two weeks.

Summer in London is uncertain, unsettled and I presume brief. As soon as the temperature raise, riding the tube is like a "sauna trip" and if you are lucky enough to take often one of the last generation
"Boris Buses" surely you have noticed you can't open the windows there, among not having air conditioning. Well, I don't know if it is because The Attorney is already here with me, but I can see the bright side of all this:

1. That nice feeling a light cardigan on.
2. Temperatures rarely go beyond 30º.
3. How nice is having a blanket in bed.
4. Zero mosquito bites. And I live by the river!
5. Picnics. And the British spontaneity when it comes to them.

Neurona y Conciencia / Brain Cell and Consciousness

Conciencia: Mmmm.... no me suena...

--------------------------------------------------
Actual conversation between my consciousness and the only creative brain cell I have left.

Brain Cell: Erm... Hi! May I?
Consciousness: Who the hell are you?
Brain Cell: Me? I am the one with the hideous blog, the one with the suitcases on top?
Consciousness: Mmmm... Doesn't ring a bell...
Brain Cell: The one that doesn't know how to write picture captions?
Consciousness: Oh, yes! I would have said you fell into the Thames and we lost you forever. We thought this island had swallowed you.
Brain Cell: Not at all! I am just forgetful and didn't pass by in a long time.
Consciousness: I understand from your visit that you are determined to continue with your world domination plan...
Brain Cell: Precisely. First the island, and then the world! (or until I forget about it again...)
(DRAMATIC PAUSE)
Consciousness: Fair enough. Tomorrow morning I want a complete report on what you have been doing these days. But right now you are needed in the kitchen, we are on a diet and sick and tired of having the same meals every single day.

------------------------------------------
I am a bit short of inspiration these days, and between that and this psychological summer we have in England, there is no way I can sit in front of the computer.
In addition, The Colony has been pretty crowded lately, we had a lot of visits, the last one from Barcelona, no less! It is fun to play the touristic guide, although it is hard sometimes, in the end I am just a foreigner!
On the other hand this week I am home alone. Buttons and Littlekitchen are on vacation getting tanned, in the meanwhile I have the whole flat to myself.
I thought I was going to be bored, but the truth is I am enjoying it! If I fancy to play loud music, I do play it! If I fancy to have a long bath, I can stay there for ages!
Since I moved to London I have been sharing, and you get used to some "living together" rules. In the end all those rules are not difficult to follow, but damn it feels good to fart in the living room if you fancy it!

P.S.: FYI As every other woman in this planet, I never fart. Ever.

Who has stolen my April?

-----------------------------------------------------------
That is what my avid readership will be wondering. If you have been following this blog, by now you will know that lack of news is never a good sign. Spring has sprung and turned my head upside down.
At first I thought I could tell you about how I met the neighbours on the 6th floor, a Spanish-Irish marriage I shared a half pint with at The Grosvenor, whilst discussing what is the best way to get rid of  annoying drunks peeing on your doorstep during the "fiestas" of La Coruña. This story seemed to me worth writing in these shitty memoirs of mine, but just some hours later, the vision of a man bleeding on the pavement of Station Road makes me change my mind.
A poor man, in sweatpants and sleepers, decides to take hin own life jumping out of a window on a rainy Tuesday morning. I don't know anything about him, but I'm afraid his dead eyes, wide open, are one of those things you can't ever forget.
Suddenly my little story had become stupid and shallow, in a way I felt I own the poor man a line here, but I don't feel like considering what makes life worth living. Approaching philosophical questions makes me anxious and then I can't sleep.
So I just let the time pass and wrote nothing whatsoever.
The following week I learned about Kismo, a furry friend that left forever and I didn't have the chance to say farewell. A farewell I will entirely process next time I visit my parents and don't see him wiggling his tail.
Between all this you can imagine I didn't feel like typing. Thank god with the Easter break some joy arrived, but I will tell you about it some other day. Today I just needed to get this out of my system and turn a page.
Farewell Kismo. And farewell to you too, poor man. Without even knowing, you took my April away.

Me aburro / Bored

He terminado el libro que estaba leyendo, he dibujado, he puesto una lavadora, he hecho ganchillo, he tendido la lavadora, me he depilado las cejas, he visto todo internet, me he pintado las uñas, he visto un capítulo de True Detective y "Los Amantes pasajeros".
------------------------------------------------
I want to tell you how exciting my weekend is. Turns out I sprained my calf crossing the street, as dull as it sounds. I didn't fall, nor slipped, it wasn't even comical! Which is really annoying, having to bare the pain without a funny little story to be told about it.
Doctor ordered to rest for two days, which is basically the whole weekend. I have been resting for a day and a half and I am already fed up.
I finished the book I was reading, I spent some time drawing, did laundry, made crochet, checked Facebook, saw the whole Internet, watched an episode of "True Detective" and Almodovar's "I'm so Excited". By the way, it is damn bad!
In short, I don't know what else to do. Give me some ideas please, I still have half day ahead, or better still, pay me a visit and take me out of this spiral! Skype visits also count.

Envalentonarse / Get Daring

-----------------------------------------
Looks like Spring has already arrived to London, the days are longer and the Sun shines more often. It has been more than a week since the last time it rained and I left the heavy coat at the bottom of my closet, but still visible, just in case.
Since the nice weather started I have been anxious about outfits. You never know how long the weather is going to be like that in here, so I want to wear all the clothes I couldn't wear during the winter and I want to wear them all at the same time.
Yesterday I got daring; We went to Trafalgar Square to see the celebrations for St. Patricks Day and, since the weather was fabulous, I decided to wear ballerinas, because if British girls can wear sandals and mini skirts in January, why can't I show my ankles in March?
Well, turns out, I can't. I was freezing cold, like North-Pole-Barbie cold (I don`t even know if this makes any sense in English...). Of course I didn't lose my cool, because dignity runs in the family, but in this case, the "When in Rome, do as the Romans" doesn't work. Maybe British girls have a gene or something that make their legs coldproof, who knows.

Paella Londinense / London Style Paella

Y a disfrutar.
--------------------------------------------------
One of the things I miss from Madrid is my mum's paella. After dreaming of it for a whole month, last Saturday I attempted a paella myself, but this one was "London Style". We didn't have a paella pan and we made it with the ingredients we could find at Sainsbury's, which is, as you already know, our favorite place in the world. This is the recipe, in case somebody out there is as whimsy as me. It won't be like my mum's, but it can do the trick.

"LONDON STYLE" PAELLA (6 SERVES)

- 1/2 kilo of Spanish paella rice
- 2 packets of Sainsbury's sea food selection (mussels, squid rings and prawns)
- 1 kilo of chicken legs
- 3 small tomatoes
- A big onion
- A small red pepper
- A small green pepper
- 2 garlic cloves
- A "Paellero" sachet (you can find it at García and Sons, otherwise you can use a teaspoon of paprika and a pinch of saffron)
- Olive oil
- Salt

Pour olive oil in a big pot until it covers the bottom. Fry the chicken legs until they start getting golden. Set them aside.
Dice garlic, onion, peppers and tomatoes. Put them in the pot and fry them slowly. Add the squid and mussels, reserve the prawns.
Add the "paellero" sachet and four glasses of water. Add the chicken legs to the mix and let it boil for five minutes. Add salt.
Preheat the oven at 260º. In a oven tray 5cm thick, pour the mix and add 2 glasses of rice (the rule is 2 glasses of water for a glass of rice). Place the prawns on top and bake it until the water is consumed.
Once is out, leave it for five minutes covered in tin foil.
And enjoy it!

5 cosas que no me gustan de Londres / 5 facts I don't like about London

---------------------------------------
Some time ago I wrote a list with five things I love from London. Every coin has two sides, so I would't be fair if I don't speak about some of the inconvenient things this city has. Always from my point of view, of course.
1. Having a coffee after 7pm is almost impossible. Coffee shops close so early, so after that time you better look for a pub and have a beer instead.
2. Pedestrian crossings. Getting used to the traffic is already difficult, but the street lights for pedestrians are green for a very short time, what makes crossing the street really stressful.
3. The traffic. Streets in London are usually narrow so depending on the hour, taking a bus could be a lethal trap. I had to got off a bus and run to the nearest tube station more than once.
4. The birds. I don't know if this only happens in my neighbourhood, but birds start chirping at 2am, maybe is luminous contamination, I don't know...
5. Electricity in bathrooms. Here are a couple of questions: Why in this country there are no sockets in the bathroom? and why there is a cord to switch on the lights? what's the deal with it?
If anybody out there is kind enough to answer those questions to me I would be forever grateful.

No me avergüenza decirlo.

A couple of weeks ago I heard through the grapevine that some spanish imigrants have started a web series about a group of spaniards in London and their ups and downs. At first it caught my attention, because I thought I would watch some of my own vicissitudes portrayed on the screen, but unfortunately I watched the first episode.
I say unfortunately, because the spaniards in this series move all together as a sheep flock, they are hick and unrespectful freeloaders that always carry a guitar even when none of them is a musician and on top of that they have Cola Cao* with chorizo for breakfast.
We (spaniards) love to whine about how the international community address us as "the bottom of Europe" but how can they address us otherwise, given the way we present ourselves?
I won't deny the situation in Spain right now is regrettable, but please could we stop portraying ourselves as ignorant chancers? I think we have enough with our politicians already.
As far as I know, not only in London, around the world there are hundreds of thousands of spaniards that make a living with dignity, speak other languages, are honest hardworking, respectful people and talented enough to do much more than simply clap their hands.
I feel ashamed when I find myself reduced to "siesta and fiesta", as I feel ashamed when I find myself related to the ones that rule my country.
I don't want to pretend I am a "citizen of the world" I have my own ups and downs with the english language, I pack serrano ham when I come back from home and can sing a Concha Piquer song if the opportunity arises (and who knows me can confirm that).
I am Spanish. I am not ashamed of saying it. I am Lázaro, Lola Flores and Quijote, but I am also Lorca and Juan Ramón Jiménez, I am Berlanga, Juan de la Cierva and Ramón y Cajal. I am joy and fiesta, but I am also tragedy, I am wine and olive oil, but I am also sweat and blood.
All I am asking is a little bit of perspective there. Thank you.

*Cola Cao is a very popular hot chocolate spanish brand.

----------------------------
We went to the theatre a couple of days ago. With this statement you may think we went to a theatre, remained in our seats while the actors performed their roles on the stage and then headed home. Well, we went to the theatre, but we didn't do any of these things.
We went to see The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable, a Punchdrunk show that could have been the most exciting theatrical experience I ever had.
The story takes place at Temple Studios, an old cinema studios that in the early Sixties had to stop its production in mysterious circumstances. Temple Studios is a big four-floor building near Paddington Station. As soon as you get in, you are invited to explore the whole building wearing a mask, a small universe where the characters move around oblivious to the white spectrums the audience is become.
You can go wherever you want, there is only one rule: you must remain silent for the whole show. You can chase a single character, follow one particular storyline or just wander around Temple Studios. Something like "choose your own adventure" books but in the flesh.
If it sounds appealing to you, there are a couple of things to bare in mind: choose comfortable footwear, you will have to walk and leave your coat in the cloakroom, even if the staff recommend you not to do so.
The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable will be at Temple Studios until March 30th. Tickets are available from 39.50 to 85.00 pounds.

La Maquina del Tiempo / The Time Machine

Interneeeeeeeeeeeet!

---------------------------
I read somewhere that even if cars don't fly yet, we are living in the future. This week it dawn on me that statement can't be more true. One doesn't realize is living in the future until is dragged into the past.
As you know, we have a new flat, and we have hired a broadband connection, but it won't be installed until March 3rd. You would say its fine, you would say it's only for three weeks, and you'd be right, however we still live in the future, and the internet ladies and gentlemen is the oxigen of the future.
We are living these days at the Colony with contempt, we sit down in the couch and look at each other with a sense of unease without knowing what to say. We wander around the flat waving our iPhones up and down in hope there is an open wifi we can join. For instance, Buttons yesterday discovered that if she climbs on top of the kitchen counter and places herself close to the window, she can reache her previous flat wifi.
Although who is suffering the most is my roommate The Duvet-Stealing Photographer. She works deleting offensive content from a dating webpage, and is already known in every Starbucks of the borough.
But don't think we are the only ones suffering from this past regression, our relatives overseas have already forgotten there is a rudimentary device called "telephone" and now, if they don't see our faces on their computer screens they don't sleep well.
And this is how we pass the time, waiting for British Telecom to bring us back to the future.
In the meantime, we'll always have Starbucks.

 ---------------------------------------------------
It's been a month since I came back to London and it has been a very busy month. Between the new job and the flat hunting, time has leaked between my fingers. Turns out January has been cold, rainy and full of obstacles, but hope February brings us a little bit of peace. A couple of months ago, when I didn't even know what was going to happen with my life, Buttons and I dreamed about being flatmates over a cup of tea. We pictured us having coffee in a Sunday morning with Littlekitchen and The Attorney at the lovely backyard of a Victorian house at Belgrave Road (dreaming is free, isn't it?) The idea grew in our minds when I knew I was coming back, and on January 10th during an ethilic walk among the the Thames we made a decision: to find a home in London. It hasn't been easy, and our path was full of obstacles that I won't name here. We have laughed, cried and made a lot of phone calls, we have met Matthew a.k.a The Sherlock Holmes of letting agents and Lana Montana, a woman with unbelievable driving skills who hasn't ever clean a dish (or at least is what we suppose). Our new home is not at Belgrave Road, obviously, and it doesn't have a backyard, but just give us some time.

Año Nuevo Vida Nueva / New Year New Life

Prometido.
Warning: I actually wrote this post two weeks ago, but it was a shame not to upload it. I will keep you up to date shortly. Promised.

------------------------------------------
I am writing this post from a BA flight, while having a complimentary sandwich and a coke. I am telling you this because I used to think that these kind of treats didn't happen anymore. Low cost flying makes you forget there was a time in which travelling was glamorous.
I am on my way back to London, after three weeks "wasting pleasures" as the Serrat's song. I enjoyed myself so much, that I can almost "roll home". But after this delicious sandwich I promise to behave (don't judge me).
It's time to set next year's goals. First of all, get rid of the weight I put this Christmas, second find a place in this city I can call home and third keep my plan on track, there still are a lot of questions, but I hope to be able to answer all of them.
In the meantime, I am going to see Buttons, Littlekitchen and Puppy, who is visiting us this weekend. I feel we are going to have a good time.
Happy 2014 to everyone.

Croquetas y Mince Pies / Croquets and Mince Pies

---------------------------------------------------------
You may remember that a couple of months ago I told you how I signed myself up in a conversation exchange website on one of my blue moods.
Without being too specific, my first two experiences with it were not very promising. The first guy I talked to got angry with me becausei told him I am married, and the second one asked me which church I usually attend a second after being introduced.
But we have an idiom in Spanish that more or less says "third time is always a wining", and this time it happened the same. I was tempted to cancel our first appointment, because the night before I was partying with Buttons, but I made an effort and attended, and thanks to that, today I can say I have a British friend.
I told The Bass Player about the Brit between pints and he was so surprised that even asked me how I did it. British people are private people, I can tell.
We meet up now and then, he takes me to curious places in the city and I teach him cool Spanish words like "fetén" and "molón". He has some conversation topics and he likes laughing, and I like people that can laugh, because they make your day.
Yesterday we went for lunch to a Spanish bar and then we had tea at Somerset House. He was a bit worried, because he finds difficult to understand a group of spaniards speaking between them. Like that never happened to me with Brits.
He tells me is going to "get tanned" eating, and I tell him "prawn" when I really mean "plum". But between misunderstandings, I found out that the British-Spanish mix is kind of weird, but actually really fun. Like having croquets for lunch and mince pies for dessert. Precisely what we had yesterday.

El té de las Cinco / Afternoon Tea

Lady Grantham.
--------------------------------------------
I wanted to talk about this for a long time. The other day we had the afternoon tea at this exquisite place: The Wolseley. Beatiful cuterly, linen tablecloths, dozens of waiters, delicious bites and delicious tea. I felt like a character of Downton Abbey.
The afternoon tea is the best known British tradition, however, it is not that old. Apparently, it was established by Anne, Duchess of Bedford, who was kind of a glutton, and used to order tea, bread and butter and cakes in the afternoon to avoid a "sinking feeling". She started offering tea to her guests, and it became a social event within the high class.
It is traditionally served with sandwiches, sweets and scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam or lemon curd.
In case you want to try it, here are a couple of things you should know about manners:
1. The correct order to serve the tea is: Pour tea first, then add milk (or lemon) and finally sugar.
2. After using the tea spoon, place it in the saucer, on the right side. Never put it in your mouth!
3. How to hold your teacup: Pinch the front and the back of the handle with your three fingers, extending the little finger is up to you, both ways are polite. It is never considered polite to put your fingers through the handle.
4. Eat small bites and sip your tea between bites. It is accepted to eat with your fingers, but no dipping!

Feliz Feliz Navidad / Merry Christmas indeed

Feliz feliz Navidad.
----------------------------------------------------
I am pretty sure you were thinking I was not coming back at all, but here I am, full of energy again.
Sincerely, I have been looking for excuses to not update the blog during the last weeks, even when I have 5 half-written posts in queue. First because The Attorney was visiting and then because I fell in a weird depressing stage, where writing about my life was the last thing I wanted to do. I wasn't quite sure about what the point of this adventure was. On one hand, I was eager to come back to Madrid, to my people, to my comfort zone, but on the other hand I felt defeated for not being able to accomplish my goals on time.
London is a big city, and as a big city, it is easy to feel loneliness in it. I came here with high expectations, and during this three months I tried to fulfill them perhaps too keenly. In this life, sometimes one has to be a little Buddhist and free yourself from expectations and desires in order to preserve some mental health.
I decided to focus on my project, nail it, and come back to Madrid with my chin up. No one could ever accuse me of not trying, not even me, which was my biggest concern.
But then again, life is whimsy, and over the course of three days everything turned upside down. Suddenly, I got a job interview, and I went out of it with a job offer. The next day I presented my project to the Met Film panel, they asked a lot of questions, but afterwards one of them approach me to know more about it, and that secretly filled me with pride.
So I am going to Madrid, but only for a couple of weeks, on January 10th I will be back in London, this time with a one way ticket. New year, new city, new job, new house. Right now I don't want to think a lot about it, I just want to enjoy my family, I miss them so much. But I can't help but feeling 2014 will bring me a lot of stories that I'll try to tell you all as often as it tickles my fancy.
Merry Christmas indeed.
