Paella Londinense / London Style Paella

Y a disfrutar.

One of the things I miss from Madrid is my mum's paella. After dreaming of it for a whole month, last Saturday I attempted a paella myself, but this one was "London Style". We didn't have a paella pan and we made it with the ingredients we could find at Sainsbury's, which is, as you already know, our favorite place in the world. This is the recipe, in case somebody out there is as whimsy as me. It won't be like my mum's, but it can do the trick.

"LONDON STYLE" PAELLA (6 SERVES)

- 1/2 kilo of Spanish paella rice
- 2 packets of Sainsbury's sea food selection (mussels, squid rings and prawns)
- 1 kilo of chicken legs
- 3 small tomatoes
- A big onion
- A small red pepper
- A small green pepper
- 2 garlic cloves
- A "Paellero" sachet (you can find it at García and Sons, otherwise you can use a teaspoon of paprika and a pinch of saffron)
- Olive oil
- Salt

Pour olive oil in a big pot until it covers the bottom. Fry the chicken legs until they start getting golden. Set them aside.
Dice garlic, onion, peppers and tomatoes. Put them in the pot and fry them slowly. Add the squid and mussels, reserve the prawns.
Add the "paellero" sachet and four glasses of water. Add the chicken legs to the mix and let it boil for five minutes. Add salt.
Preheat the oven at 260º. In a oven tray 5cm thick, pour the mix and add 2 glasses of rice (the rule is 2 glasses of water for a glass of rice). Place the prawns on top and bake it until the water is consumed.
Once is out, leave it for five minutes covered in tin foil.
And enjoy it!

5 cosas que no me gustan de Londres / 5 facts I don't like about London

Some time ago I wrote a list with five things I love from London. Every coin has two sides, so I would't be fair if I don't speak about some of the inconvenient things this city has. Always from my point of view, of course.
1. Having a coffee after 7pm is almost impossible. Coffee shops close so early, so after that time you better look for a pub and have a beer instead.
2. Pedestrian crossings. Getting used to the traffic is already difficult, but the street lights for pedestrians are green for a very short time, what makes crossing the street really stressful.
3. The traffic. Streets in London are usually narrow so depending on the hour, taking a bus could be a lethal trap. I had to got off a bus and run to the nearest tube station more than once.
4. The birds. I don't know if this only happens in my neighbourhood, but birds start chirping at 2am, maybe is luminous contamination, I don't know...
5. Electricity in bathrooms. Here are a couple of questions: Why in this country there are no sockets in the bathroom? and why there is a cord to switch on the lights? what's the deal with it?
If anybody out there is kind enough to answer those questions to me I would be forever grateful.

No me avergüenza decirlo.
------------------------------------------------------------
A couple of weeks ago I heard through the grapevine that some spanish imigrants have started a web series about a group of spaniards in London and their ups and downs. At first it caught my attention, because I thought I would watch some of my own vicissitudes portrayed on the screen, but unfortunately I watched the first episode.
I say unfortunately, because the spaniards in this series move all together as a sheep flock, they are hick and unrespectful freeloaders that always carry a guitar even when none of them is a musician and on top of that they have Cola Cao* with chorizo for breakfast.
We (spaniards) love to whine about how the international community address us as "the bottom of Europe" but how can they address us otherwise, given the way we present ourselves?
I won't deny the situation in Spain right now is regrettable, but please could we stop portraying ourselves as ignorant chancers? I think we have enough with our politicians already.
As far as I know, not only in London, around the world there are hundreds of thousands of spaniards that make a living with dignity, speak other languages, are honest hardworking, respectful people and talented enough to do much more than simply clap their hands.
I feel ashamed when I find myself reduced to "siesta and fiesta", as I feel ashamed when I find myself related to the ones that rule my country.
I don't want to pretend I am a "citizen of the world" I have my own ups and downs with the english language, I pack serrano ham when I come back from home and can sing a Concha Piquer song if the opportunity arises (and who knows me can confirm that).
I am Spanish. I am not ashamed of saying it. I am Lázaro, Lola Flores and Quijote, but I am also Lorca and Juan Ramón Jiménez, I am Berlanga, Juan de la Cierva and Ramón y Cajal. I am joy and fiesta, but I am also tragedy, I am wine and olive oil, but I am also sweat and blood.
All I am asking is a little bit of perspective there. Thank you.

*Cola Cao is a very popular hot chocolate spanish brand.

----------------------------
We went to the theatre a couple of days ago. With this statement you may think we went to a theatre, remained in our seats while the actors performed their roles on the stage and then headed home. Well, we went to the theatre, but we didn't do any of these things.
We went to see The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable, a Punchdrunk show that could have been the most exciting theatrical experience I ever had.
The story takes place at Temple Studios, an old cinema studios that in the early Sixties had to stop its production in mysterious circumstances. Temple Studios is a big four-floor building near Paddington Station. As soon as you get in, you are invited to explore the whole building wearing a mask, a small universe where the characters move around oblivious to the white spectrums the audience is become.
You can go wherever you want, there is only one rule: you must remain silent for the whole show. You can chase a single character, follow one particular storyline or just wander around Temple Studios. Something like "choose your own adventure" books but in the flesh.
If it sounds appealing to you, there are a couple of things to bare in mind: choose comfortable footwear, you will have to walk and leave your coat in the cloakroom, even if the staff recommend you not to do so.
The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable will be at Temple Studios until March 30th. Tickets are available from 39.50 to 85.00 pounds.

La Maquina del Tiempo / The Time Machine

Interneeeeeeeeeeeet!

---------------------------
I read somewhere that even if cars don't fly yet, we are living in the future. This week it dawn on me that statement can't be more true. One doesn't realize is living in the future until is dragged into the past.
As you know, we have a new flat, and we have hired a broadband connection, but it won't be installed until March 3rd. You would say its fine, you would say it's only for three weeks, and you'd be right, however we still live in the future, and the internet ladies and gentlemen is the oxigen of the future.
We are living these days at the Colony with contempt, we sit down in the couch and look at each other with a sense of unease without knowing what to say. We wander around the flat waving our iPhones up and down in hope there is an open wifi we can join. For instance, Buttons yesterday discovered that if she climbs on top of the kitchen counter and places herself close to the window, she can reache her previous flat wifi.
Although who is suffering the most is my roommate The Duvet-Stealing Photographer. She works deleting offensive content from a dating webpage, and is already known in every Starbucks of the borough.
But don't think we are the only ones suffering from this past regression, our relatives overseas have already forgotten there is a rudimentary device called "telephone" and now, if they don't see our faces on their computer screens they don't sleep well.
And this is how we pass the time, waiting for British Telecom to bring us back to the future.
In the meantime, we'll always have Starbucks.

 ---------------------------------------------------
It's been a month since I came back to London and it has been a very busy month. Between the new job and the flat hunting, time has leaked between my fingers. Turns out January has been cold, rainy and full of obstacles, but hope February brings us a little bit of peace. A couple of months ago, when I didn't even know what was going to happen with my life, Buttons and I dreamed about being flatmates over a cup of tea. We pictured us having coffee in a Sunday morning with Littlekitchen and The Attorney at the lovely backyard of a Victorian house at Belgrave Road (dreaming is free, isn't it?) The idea grew in our minds when I knew I was coming back, and on January 10th during an ethilic walk among the the Thames we made a decision: to find a home in London. It hasn't been easy, and our path was full of obstacles that I won't name here. We have laughed, cried and made a lot of phone calls, we have met Matthew a.k.a The Sherlock Holmes of letting agents and Lana Montana, a woman with unbelievable driving skills who hasn't ever clean a dish (or at least is what we suppose). Our new home is not at Belgrave Road, obviously, and it doesn't have a backyard, but just give us some time.

Año Nuevo Vida Nueva / New Year New Life

Prometido.
Warning: I actually wrote this post two weeks ago, but it was a shame not to upload it. I will keep you up to date shortly. Promised.

------------------------------------------
I am writing this post from a BA flight, while having a complimentary sandwich and a coke. I am telling you this because I used to think that these kind of treats didn't happen anymore. Low cost flying makes you forget there was a time in which travelling was glamorous.
I am on my way back to London, after three weeks "wasting pleasures" as the Serrat's song. I enjoyed myself so much, that I can almost "roll home". But after this delicious sandwich I promise to behave (don't judge me).
It's time to set next year's goals. First of all, get rid of the weight I put this Christmas, second find a place in this city I can call home and third keep my plan on track, there still are a lot of questions, but I hope to be able to answer all of them.
In the meantime, I am going to see Buttons, Littlekitchen and Puppy, who is visiting us this weekend. I feel we are going to have a good time.
Happy 2014 to everyone.
