Who has stolen my April?

That is what my avid readership will be wondering. If you have been following this blog, by now you will know that lack of news is never a good sign. Spring has sprung and turned my head upside down.
At first I thought I could tell you about how I met the neighbours on the 6th floor, a Spanish-Irish marriage I shared a half pint with at The Grosvenor, whilst discussing what is the best way to get rid of annoying drunks peeing on your doorstep during the "fiestas" of La Coruña. This story seemed to me worth writing in these shitty memoirs of mine, but just some hours later, the vision of a man bleeding on the pavement of Station Road makes me change my mind.
A poor man, in sweatpants and sleepers, decides to take hin own life jumping out of a window on a rainy Tuesday morning. I don't know anything about him, but I'm afraid his dead eyes, wide open, are one of those things you can't ever forget.
Suddenly my little story had become stupid and shallow, in a way I felt I own the poor man a line here, but I don't feel like considering what makes life worth living. Approaching philosophical questions makes me anxious and then I can't sleep.
So I just let the time pass and wrote nothing whatsoever.
The following week I learned about Kismo, a furry friend that left forever and I didn't have the chance to say farewell. A farewell I will entirely process next time I visit my parents and don't see him wiggling his tail.
Between all this you can imagine I didn't feel like typing. Thank god with the Easter break some joy arrived, but I will tell you about it some other day. Today I just needed to get this out of my system and turn a page.
Farewell Kismo. And farewell to you too, poor man. Without even knowing, you took my April away.

Me aburro / Bored
He terminado el libro que estaba leyendo, he dibujado, he puesto una lavadora, he hecho ganchillo, he tendido la lavadora, me he depilado las cejas, he visto todo internet, me he pintado las uñas, he visto un capítulo de True Detective y "Los Amantes pasajeros".
------------------------------------------------
I want to tell you how exciting my weekend is. Turns out I sprained my calf crossing the street, as dull as it sounds. I didn't fall, nor slipped, it wasn't even comical! Which is really annoying, having to bare the pain without a funny little story to be told about it.
Doctor ordered to rest for two days, which is basically the whole weekend. I have been resting for a day and a half and I am already fed up.
I finished the book I was reading, I spent some time drawing, did laundry, made crochet, checked Facebook, saw the whole Internet, watched an episode of "True Detective" and Almodovar's "I'm so Excited". By the way, it is damn bad!
In short, I don't know what else to do. Give me some ideas please, I still have half day ahead, or better still, pay me a visit and take me out of this spiral! Skype visits also count.

Envalentonarse / Get Daring
-----------------------------------------
Looks like Spring has already arrived to London, the days are longer and the Sun shines more often. It has been more than a week since the last time it rained and I left the heavy coat at the bottom of my closet, but still visible, just in case.
Since the nice weather started I have been anxious about outfits. You never know how long the weather is going to be like that in here, so I want to wear all the clothes I couldn't wear during the winter and I want to wear them all at the same time.
Yesterday I got daring; We went to Trafalgar Square to see the celebrations for St. Patricks Day and, since the weather was fabulous, I decided to wear ballerinas, because if British girls can wear sandals and mini skirts in January, why can't I show my ankles in March?
Well, turns out, I can't. I was freezing cold, like North-Pole-Barbie cold (I don`t even know if this makes any sense in English...). Of course I didn't lose my cool, because dignity runs in the family, but in this case, the "When in Rome, do as the Romans" doesn't work. Maybe British girls have a gene or something that make their legs coldproof, who knows.

Paella Londinense / London Style Paella
Y a disfrutar.

One of the things I miss from Madrid is my mum's paella. After dreaming of it for a whole month, last Saturday I attempted a paella myself, but this one was "London Style". We didn't have a paella pan and we made it with the ingredients we could find at Sainsbury's, which is, as you already know, our favorite place in the world. This is the recipe, in case somebody out there is as whimsy as me. It won't be like my mum's, but it can do the trick.
"LONDON STYLE" PAELLA (6 SERVES)
- 1/2 kilo of Spanish paella rice
- 2 packets of Sainsbury's sea food selection (mussels, squid rings and prawns)
- 1 kilo of chicken legs
- 3 small tomatoes
- A big onion
- A small red pepper
- A small green pepper
- 2 garlic cloves
- A "Paellero" sachet (you can find it at García and Sons, otherwise you can use a teaspoon of paprika and a pinch of saffron)
- Olive oil
- Salt
Pour olive oil in a big pot until it covers the bottom. Fry the chicken legs until they start getting golden. Set them aside.
Dice garlic, onion, peppers and tomatoes. Put them in the pot and fry them slowly. Add the squid and mussels, reserve the prawns.
Add the "paellero" sachet and four glasses of water. Add the chicken legs to the mix and let it boil for five minutes. Add salt.
Preheat the oven at 260º. In a oven tray 5cm thick, pour the mix and add 2 glasses of rice (the rule is 2 glasses of water for a glass of rice). Place the prawns on top and bake it until the water is consumed.
Once is out, leave it for five minutes covered in tin foil.
And enjoy it!

5 cosas que no me gustan de Londres / 5 facts I don't like about London

Some time ago I wrote a list with five things I love from London. Every coin has two sides, so I would't be fair if I don't speak about some of the inconvenient things this city has. Always from my point of view, of course.
1. Having a coffee after 7pm is almost impossible. Coffee shops close so early, so after that time you better look for a pub and have a beer instead.
2. Pedestrian crossings. Getting used to the traffic is already difficult, but the street lights for pedestrians are green for a very short time, what makes crossing the street really stressful.
3. The traffic. Streets in London are usually narrow so depending on the hour, taking a bus could be a lethal trap. I had to got off a bus and run to the nearest tube station more than once.
4. The birds. I don't know if this only happens in my neighbourhood, but birds start chirping at 2am, maybe is luminous contamination, I don't know...
5. Electricity in bathrooms. Here are a couple of questions: Why in this country there are no sockets in the bathroom? and why there is a cord to switch on the lights? what's the deal with it?
If anybody out there is kind enough to answer those questions to me I would be forever grateful.

No me avergüenza decirlo.
------------------------------------------------------------
A couple of weeks ago I heard through the grapevine that some spanish imigrants have started a web series about a group of spaniards in London and their ups and downs. At first it caught my attention, because I thought I would watch some of my own vicissitudes portrayed on the screen, but unfortunately I watched the first episode.
I say unfortunately, because the spaniards in this series move all together as a sheep flock, they are hick and unrespectful freeloaders that always carry a guitar even when none of them is a musician and on top of that they have Cola Cao* with chorizo for breakfast.
We (spaniards) love to whine about how the international community address us as "the bottom of Europe" but how can they address us otherwise, given the way we present ourselves?
I won't deny the situation in Spain right now is regrettable, but please could we stop portraying ourselves as ignorant chancers? I think we have enough with our politicians already.
As far as I know, not only in London, around the world there are hundreds of thousands of spaniards that make a living with dignity, speak other languages, are honest hardworking, respectful people and talented enough to do much more than simply clap their hands.
I feel ashamed when I find myself reduced to "siesta and fiesta", as I feel ashamed when I find myself related to the ones that rule my country.
I don't want to pretend I am a "citizen of the world" I have my own ups and downs with the english language, I pack serrano ham when I come back from home and can sing a Concha Piquer song if the opportunity arises (and who knows me can confirm that).
I am Spanish. I am not ashamed of saying it. I am Lázaro, Lola Flores and Quijote, but I am also Lorca and Juan Ramón Jiménez, I am Berlanga, Juan de la Cierva and Ramón y Cajal. I am joy and fiesta, but I am also tragedy, I am wine and olive oil, but I am also sweat and blood.
All I am asking is a little bit of perspective there. Thank you.
*Cola Cao is a very popular hot chocolate spanish brand.

----------------------------
We went to the theatre a couple of days ago. With this statement you may think we went to a theatre, remained in our seats while the actors performed their roles on the stage and then headed home. Well, we went to the theatre, but we didn't do any of these things.
We went to see The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable, a Punchdrunk show that could have been the most exciting theatrical experience I ever had.
The story takes place at Temple Studios, an old cinema studios that in the early Sixties had to stop its production in mysterious circumstances. Temple Studios is a big four-floor building near Paddington Station. As soon as you get in, you are invited to explore the whole building wearing a mask, a small universe where the characters move around oblivious to the white spectrums the audience is become.
You can go wherever you want, there is only one rule: you must remain silent for the whole show. You can chase a single character, follow one particular storyline or just wander around Temple Studios. Something like "choose your own adventure" books but in the flesh.
If it sounds appealing to you, there are a couple of things to bare in mind: choose comfortable footwear, you will have to walk and leave your coat in the cloakroom, even if the staff recommend you not to do so.
The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable will be at Temple Studios until March 30th. Tickets are available from 39.50 to 85.00 pounds.
